Slightly breathless


and all the things you say
at the end are a waste of time
with thoughts that you pretend were
thought by yourself
but they were thought by someone else
from someone elses book

and all the little things you say
at the end of the day
to make it alright for the night
to make it all okay

and when you sleep
you’ll dream of things
that you’ve never seen
and hope they’ll stay with you
after the dream

and wake with all the things you’ve learned
and all the things you’ve done
when you were half asleep
and the dream was half begun
but love is always leaving you by the wayside

and half a dozen times you swear
that this girl could be your wife
and half a dozen times
you claim that you’re settled for life

and so you stake it all
on one small hope
and wake up one day
with nothing more to say

and half a dozen friends
will swear that this girl
is the one for you
spend half a dozen lives
and try and find if it’s true

and one night when you sleep
you find you meet God in a dream
but don’t have time
to ask him what it means

and wake with all the things you’ve learned
and all the thing you’ve done
when you were half asleep
and the dream was half begun

by the wayside

and how many times
have you told yourself
that this time it’s real
you’ll love nobody else

And swear to yourself
you can’t stand the pain
falling in love
again and again...

so you finally run away
and then you try to find yourself

is that you want somebody else

the only girl you’ve loved
you find out just couldn’t care less
she left you lonely
and slightly breathless
